Pre-Season Snowboard Checklist: 8 Things to Check Before Your First Day

1. Base Condition

Flip your board over and inspect the base. Look for:

  • Deep scratches or core shots โ€” these need professional repair
  • Dry, white patches โ€” the base is oxidized and needs a hot wax
  • Rust on edges โ€” light rust buffs off, heavy rust needs a tune

If the base looks dry and white even after a quick rub with wax, it’s time for a full hot wax and edge tune.

2. Edge Sharpness

Run your fingernail lightly along the edge at a 45ยฐ angle. If it shaves off a sliver, your edges are sharp. If it just slides, they’re dull.

Dull edges = no grip on hardpack and ice. Get them sharpened, especially if you ride icy East Coast conditions.

3. Binding Hardware

Check every screw on your bindings. Vibration loosens them over the season, and a loose binding at speed is dangerous. Tighten the disk screws (the ones that attach to the board) and the strap screws.

Pro tip: Add a drop of blue Loctite to each screw to prevent future loosening.

4. Binding Ratchets

Click each ratchet a few times. It should engage smoothly with a solid click. If it slips or feels mushy, the ladder strap (the plastic strap the ratchet grabs) is worn out and needs replacing.

5. Boot Liners

Pull your liners out and check for:

  • Packed-out foam โ€” if your finger sinks in without resistance, the liner is done
  • Cracked or delaminated areas โ€” time for new liners or new boots
  • Worn heel pocket โ€” causes heel lift, which kills response

If you’ve had 80โ€“100 days on your liners, they’re probably due for replacement even if they look okay.

6. Boot Lacing System

  • BOA: Spin the dial and check that the cable moves freely. If it sticks or the dial feels gritty, clean it or replace the cable.
  • Laces: Check for fraying. Broken laces on the mountain = ruined day.
  • Speed Zone: Pull the handles and make sure they retract smoothly.

7. Stomp Pad

If your stomp pad is peeling off, re-glue it now. You need it for one-footed skating and getting off the lift.

8. Storage Damage

If you stored your board base-to-base with another board, check for base welds โ€” where the wax from one board melted into the other. This happens in hot garages and storage units. A plastic scraper can remove light welds; heavy ones need a base grind.

Bonus: What to Pack for Opening Day

  • Fresh hot wax (or get it done at a shop)
  • Edge tune if needed
  • Spare binding screws
  • Extra laces or BOA cable
  • Helmet and goggles (check lens for scratches)
  • Waterproof your jacket and pants if the DWR is wearing off

Run through this list, and you’ll be the one carving first tracks while everyone else is in the parking lot fixing their gear.
